Tower of Pisa – Italy
The Italians have a lust for life, a warmth and vibrancy that is so special, so very much their own. Visitors in Italy are always charmed by its vibrant atmosphere, its wealth and its incredible art and architecture, its great food and wine. A holiday in Italy is full of lots of fun, sun, fantastic sightseeing, memorable meals and interesting people. Italy boast many interesting museums and churches, just waiting to be explored. No visit in Italy is complete without gazing awestruck at the beauty of the craftsmanship of the Tower of Pisa.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a bell tower which is famous because it began to lean to one side and sink into the ground. It is also famous because of its decorations which document the construction of the tower from when it began in 1173 and when it ended in 1360. It is also famous because that is where Galileo supposedly conducted free fall physics experiments. The bell tower is located in Pisa, Italy, on Piazza dei Miracoli next to the Cathedral. The tower was originally meant to be straight, but it began to sink which was caused by the uneven ground underneath. The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Torre Pendente) is known throughout the world. It is the bell tower of the Pisa cathedral and when visiting the tower, it is hard to understand how it has remained standing after more than 700 years. It tilts because its foundation was built on unstable soil and it seems to defy gravity – you wonder why it doesn’t topple. Yet, even if the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy didn't lean, visitors would come to marvel at its design. There are other medieval towers in Italy that have failed to keep upright, but it is the Tower of Pisa that has captured the world's imagination. The tower has always tilted and nobody ever put his or her name to it, so who was to blame is a mystery. The Leaning Tower of Pisa’s internal steps have been closed to the public. No longer can the public climb the 294-step spiral staircase to the belfry as a million people have done in the past.
